это скорее certificate (of employment)! |

reference letter from a previous (или the current) employer |
It actually depends on the contents of the Spravka. It could be a Letter of Reference, if last employer gives assesment of employee for any future employer. It could also be Statement of Employement. Certificate is more of an official document, ie, stamped, sealed, etc., unless, of course, this is what is in question. |
Если очень хочется, можете написать to whom it may concern (в шапке). |
The present is to certify that ... |

To Whom It May Concern,
вот ссылка на одно из обсуждений : http://www.multitran.ru/c/m.exe?a=ForumReplies&MessNum=46901&l1=1&l2=2&SearchString=has been in XXX employment&MessageNumber=46901 |
Кэт - you are right. In English letters ususally the word "spravka" is not used. They are more specific. However, having spent most of my life in the US (prior to coming to Russia), I will have to disagree with you on Letter of Reference (Reference Letter) - it is the EXACT title given to a letter supplied by employer to an employee that no longer works there. To whom it may concern is an optional form of address when you don't know the name of the RECIPIENT - in other words, there is a choice of Dear Sir/Madam or To whom it may concern. (standard form). Banks issue Letters of Credit, other organizations may have other, industry specific headings. An aside: believe me, that in most American high schools (and note that I am not extending any of this to UK standards), we are taught how to write business letters before we graduate. That, and how to write a Resume (Curriculum Vitae). It is one of those skills without which we are not allowed to graduate. Perhaps sad, but true. Finally, this debate is useless, since we still don't know the content of this Spravka that the person requesting information asked for. |
kath, actually the content of such spravka will nearly always be that Mr/Ms X is an employee of XYZ (imho - this will be the case). if required, it will also state the salary (as, for instance, to apply for a UK visa, the "spravka s mesta raboty" must state the salary). I would go for "statement" or "letter from (the) employer" (but I don't think it will be ok as the document title). certificate of employment, in Eurospeak CERTIFICAT DE TRAVAIL CERTIFICATE OF EMPLOYMENT Document which employers are obliged to issue, on request, to any employee whose contract of employment comes to an end. It may state only the dates on which employment commenced and ended and the nature of the post(s) occupied. Subjective or critical comments are not permitted. In the case of a fixed-term contract , the certificate must be issued, on request, at least eight days before its expiry. |
Thank you, kath, for your support. :-) (Only pls note I did not write anything about Letters of Reference :-) ) |
