"Such kind of something or that kind of thing is made plural with the phrases these kinds of things or those kinds of things, but the singular versions are much more commonly used. Such kind of thing is much more common than Such kinds of things: They have been trained for this (such) kind of thing. [=They have been trained to do this.] He has said these (such) kinds of things in public before. [=He has said such things in public before.]" |

Whether to use 'kind'/'kinds' in your example depends on the context and on exactly what you're trying to say. What's the full paragraph? |
johnstephenson, thanks for responding) here comes the context: Cloning experiments must be under intense government scrutiny. First of all, such kind(S) of experiments are extremely dangerous... |

the 23:09 context mentions only ONE kind of experiments: cloning. that said, there could always be more above it ;) |

Asker: You've referred to both 'explorations' and 'experiments' in your posts, but I'm assuming that you mean 'experiments'. You have to use 'such kinds' [plural] in this example -- because 'experiments' has been written in the plural. In examples such as this one, whether you should use 'such kind' or 'such kinds', depends mainly on whether the noun which follows, is in the singular or the plural. The rules for using 'such kind' or 'such kinds' in examples such as this, aren't straightforward: 1) You can't normally say 'such kind [singular] of experiments [plural]' in examples such as yours, as it doesn't sound English. But, strangely, you can say either: 2) 'such kinds [plural] of experiments [plural]' or even 3) 'such kinds [plural] of experiment [singular]'. For some strange reason the form shown in 1) above [singular+plural] is rarely used in English -- but the forms shown in 2) [plural+plural] and 3) [plural+singular] are both very common. |
/// First of all, such kind(S) of experiments are extremely dangerous.../// Don't use garbage words. First of all, such experiments are extremely dangerous... |
johnstephenson, Thank you very much! |
Amor 71, yea, that's much easier:) |

Amor 71: I agree. In sentences such as the asker's, 'kind(s) of' sounds superfluous to me -- but some people insist on using it, unfortunately. If someone insists on using 'kind(s) of', 'this kind of'/'these kinds of' sounds better to me. It usually means the same as 'such kind(s) of' and sounds less awkward. |
