rapid advance of science (Sir Kingsley Wood, a British politician speaking at a 1924 dinner in London, told his audience that “there was no doubt that by 2024 the average expectation of life would be at least 100 years old, and a person at 75 would be a comparatively young man.” He expected the rapid advance of science would ensure that the future grandchildren of those at the dinner would live many years longer than those present.
