http://www.daycourses.com/uk/school_system.html Following GCSE (the General Certificate of Secondary Education), students move on to two more years of study, following between two and four subjects (usually three). The subject range is generally narrow, so it's common, for example, for students to take either all arts-based subjects or all science-based subjects - it's less common to mix them as an Irish student would. Each subject is studied to a high level of specialization, the coursework and examinations involve a lot of essay writing. At the end of this two-year period of study, students take the examinations for the Advanced level of the General Certificate of Education (known as 'A' levels).
