Gross Living Area (GLA) A term used by residential appraisers to describe finished, above-grade residential space, measured to the outside face of exterior enclosing walls. Also referred to as Residential Living Area in the 1995 version of the AIA D-101 Standard, the measurement method is not defined in any major published measurement standard. Gross Measured Area From the BOMA Office Standard, the total of all fully enclosed floor areas of a building, measured to the Dominant Portion of the Finished Surface of exterior enclosing walls, including basements and penthouses.
