The breach need not be the sole cause but it must be an effective cause. In other words, there must be a ‘chain of causation'between the breach and the loss suffered by the claimant. If the chain of causation is broken by intervening acts (between the breach and the loss) that cannot be said to be reasonably foreseeable, then the defendant will not be liable for damages.
